The Old Southendian Association

by Banana Crumble | Nov 26, 2018

The Old Southendian Association is one of the oldest and largest Old Boy’s Associations in this country today. The Association is made up of a total membership of over 2500 with numbers growing regularly. All members had to attend Southend High School for Boys with girls becoming members if they attended the sixth form.

Alongside the Association they have a number of affiliated clubs and societies, ranging from Cricket to Organ Society. As well as the Association allowing old school members to socialise and meet old friends, they work closely with the school on a financial level, recently donating to restore the school’s organ, an instrument which goes back generations.

Every year the Association holds a reunion dinner as well as other events which allow people who haven’t caught up in years to get together. Saturday 10th November saw the Association hold its 81st annual dinner at the Park Inn in Southend! Over 200 people were at the event with age ranges varying with the youngest being 17 to the oldest gentleman on the night aged 94. People travel from all over the world to attend the event.

Speeches took place, with the President Kevin Leigh kicking off proceedings followed by the School Headteacher Robin Bevan and finished off by School Captain Tom Stuttle.

Although all members of the school are part of different houses (Sparta, Athens, Troy and Tuscany), old school rivalries are put aside with everyone joining in to sing the school song with much gusto.

A fantastic night was had by all with many people catching up with old faces and meeting new friends.
