If you can’t beat them then do it on your own!

No sooner than we feature one inspiring story then we find another and this one is certainly one that will make your jaw drop. Sophie Holmes was the inspiration being the launch of Banana Crumble and we have featured many of her heroic activities over the years since we have been in existence. Sophie is never the one to shun a challenge despite suffering from Cystic Fibrosis. Having the condition with the current Coronavirus means Sophie is in the highly vulnerable category. Sophie was scheduled to complete an Iron Man Challenge in Austria which has obviously been cancelled. The majority of people would say “oh well next year” but not Sophie!!

Taking into account that Sophie cannot leave the constraints of her garden or house then the challenge she has set her self is none other than truly amazing. She has decided that on Sunday 10th May she will do the bike run part of the Ironman from her own house which means that she will cycle 180km on her turbo cycle trainer, but not only that she will complete her 42.1km lawn marathon.  The 42.1 km sounds bad enough but when you break it down into garden laps it is actually 842 laps of the front garden. Having the determination and motivation to be able to complete this challenge is truly amazing. Sophie is raising money for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and also for the NHS. Both really great charities to support.

Matt, our Chief Banana will be taking his hour of exercise on Sunday and will be cycling past Sophie’s house and we know that he will certainly be cheering her on with this incredible challenge. If you would like to find out more about this challenge then please click here.

We will definitely be letting you know how the Essex Ironman challenge goes. We also know that as soon as Sophie can she will be completing the swimming part of this before actually completing the real event when it is rescheduled.

If you can’t beat it…..

Yesterday, 26th April should have been the London marathon. People from all over the country had been training and their plans and money raised for charity put on hold until the event can be scheduled. This has stopped most people and we have seen the 2.6 challenge where people are doing things that link in with the 26 miles of the marathon still trying to raise much needed funds for their chosen charities.

We have featured Liam McHugh many times and over and over again we have said what a true inspiration he is. Liam was, like many, supposed to be running in the London Marathon and when he realised that the race was going to be postponed he decided that he would still run the marathon but in his home town in Northern Ireland. He said he would run a marathon around Spamount in Castleberg to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. There was one stipulation people had to keep to social distancing guidelines if they came out to support. At the end of the race Liam was proud to announce that he had raised £33,000 for completing his marathon yesterday. Beyond this amazing achievement it means  that with the amount of money raised and adding it to his previous fundraising total it now means he has topped an absolutely incredible £266.000. The word legend gets said so many times but Liam you truly are!!

The Battle for Orkambi

A few weeks ago we told everyone the great news that the drugs Orkambi and Symkevi would be licensed in England, following on from the same news from Scotland a few weeks previously. In that feature we hoped that similar action would then cover the remaining areas of the UK. Liam McHugh, who we have featured so many times has been instrumental in this battle particularly in his home country of Northern Ireland. We are so pleased to say that at the end of October Liam’s hard work did pay off and Northern Ireland quickly followed by Wales was added to the list already containing Scotland and England.

For many this battle has taken years and years of hard work, dedication and determination. Many of the CF patients have received their new medications and we sincerely hope that this drug gives the quality of life to so many that otherwise would have struggled. We learnt about this battle, originally through Liam McHugh who ran a feature with us about Orkambi. Since then we have followed with keen interest and hope that with our involvement with Banana Crumble features and our work with the CF Trust that maybe we have helped spread some awareness.

Thank you to Banana Crumble from The Cystic Fibrosis Trust

A few weeks ago we told you that we had hosted an afternoon tea and handed over a cheque for £5000 to The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. An amount that we are extremely proud of and one that we really feel will have made a difference.

We received a letter from The CF Trust thanking us and everyone that has helped us raise those funds. As members of Banana Crumble each and everyone of you has helped towards this total either by reading our articles, telling friends about us, joining in with our fundraising events, donating prizes or just looking at our site. Without you this wouldn’t have been possible and we would like to share with you the letter of thanks that we have received.

So many people still believe that Banana Crumble is good good to be true and that there must be a catch. In The Cystic Fibrosis Trusts post on their own website about the monies raised they said in their own words:

“That the proof of the pudding was in the cheque…….”

Hopefully with this letter people can see how Banana Crumble really has made a difference. If you can help us spread the word we would be grateful. We are looking for companies that would like to sponsor us so that we can continue with our mission of proving things are not necessarily too good to be true.

Anyone for tea?

On Saturday 9th February, Banana Crumble hosted an afternoon tea where they handed over their Cheque for £5000 which was the money raised last year for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and also to add more funds and to help raise money for their 2019 total. The event was attended by 30 family and friends as well as Jess Nickless from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Finger sandwiches and cakes were consumed by everyone a plenty with cups of tea, coffee and glasses of prosecco to wash down all of the food.

On the day we handed over the money Banana Crumble raised in its first year for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust which was totalled at £5000. The money was raised by our own fund-raising events, unclaimed prizes and donations by some of our winners and other organisations, including the Southend Round Table who kindly donated £500. Our Chief Banana and Jess both said some words on the day thanking everyone for attending as well as Asda who helped the event by donating scones and clotted cream for the day. Jess told everyone that the £5000 could cover the CF Trust’s telephone helpline for over a month and what a huge difference this amount of money would make and how grateful they were to Banana Crumble for making such a large donation.

The afternoon ended up raising an additional £310 for the Trust which will go towards our total raised this year..

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the day, to the CF Trust, Asda and all those who helped with cakes and making the afternoon such great fun.

I had a dream!!

I had a dream!! I wanted to make the world a better place, I wanted to help people have a chance to take that first step as they start out, I wanted to help raise money for charity and I wanted to give people a chance to be happy!! That was my dream and we are now just over a year on from that initial dream.

Have I achieved this?

Our Banana Chat is aimed at an inspirational person each week and in most cases is someone at the start of their career needing a bit of publicity or a chance to have something published or advertised. How amazing is it that we have featured bands, musicians, sports people, business start ups and and many more. They have all been given the chance to promote whatever they want and to raise awareness for their own project or a charity close to their heart. This has been so rewarding and the feedback from those featured and those reading the article has been nothing more than remarkable. Tick – I feel I have well and truly given people the chance to take that first step into the world and hopefully help some along the way.

Raise money for charity – Absolutely tick, with our own fundraising evenings and the unclaimed prizes from Banana Crumble we have raised over £5000 for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. A huge sum of money that will hopefully help the Trust with their really valuable work.

Make the world a better place – In a year where there has been lots of bad news we have published almost 300 articles and every one has been a good news or positive story. If the feature didn’t  quite tick that box then it was designed to make you smile. Moving on to our Smile Wall, this has made so many people happy just by looking at it and when we get messages like this 100% we have achieved this goal.

Thank you so much, you would not believe how much we appreciate this as we were so worried about affording Xmas for the kids. This will really help us.

I wanted to make people happy – this is another big tick. Each week when we hear from our winners we ask them for a quote which we have featured in our articles throughout the year. To have helped so many people to do so many things, this is just such an amazing feeling.

I’m a university student so the money will really help with buying food and maybe a night out with my mate. It was really good timing to be fair, as it’s coming up to Christmas and I’m rather short of money at the moment!

Have I achieved my dream? I can 100% say I am really proud of all that we have achieved with Banana Crumble. Have I made any money from this? Absolutely not. I used some money that my Grandad left me to set this up and I know that he would be extremely proud of all that we have achieved.

How do we take Banana Crumble forward. We are looking for companies that have the same positive ethos as us, who want to help us raise money for charity, give people a chance to start out and to inspire others. We are looking for small companies who would like to feature with us and can appear on our website and would perhaps like to advertise with us. We want to find companies who are starting out who can’t afford the massive advertising costs associated with big business. If you feel that you are positive enough to want to join us and would like to talk advertising or sponsorship with us please email us at admin@bananacrumble.co.uk. We are looking for bigger companies who would like to sponsor us and help us continue with our philosophy.

Unclaimed prizes, any profit goes to charity, people have the chance to win a cash prize each week – what is there to lose. It really is win win for everyone and hopefully one that we can take forward into our second year with Banana Crumble. How can you help us ? Read our articles, click on our adverts and get all your friends and family to sign up. Easy!!!!

How amazing is this?

When Banana Crumble launched just over a year ago we decided that our Charity of The Year would be The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Over that period all of our unclaimed prizes, fundraising and a couple of winners’ donations have totalled up and we have now topped the £5000 mark which is absolutely fantastic news and we hope that this will help The Cystic Fibrosis Trust to continue their great work with our donation.

We are planning on holding an event in the New Year where we can present the CF Trust with our donation. Watch this space… To find out more about the Cystic Fibrosis Trust why don’t you read the “Our Charity” page on our website.

The big day is here…

Today. Thursday 25th October, is the day that Sophie Holmes and her dad Peter are off on their charity trek to the Himalayas. Even before the trek has started they have already reached their target of £3000 for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. They are now hoping to raise £5000. To read more about the trek read our previous article.

We know that both Peter and Sophie have trained hard so that they can complete the Dalai Lama Himalayan Trek. They have needed to get specialist equipment to be able to deal with the tough terrain.

We at Banana Crumble would like to wish them all the best for their trek and we hope that on their return we will be able to feature an article about their experience. How amazing to have that special father daughter time in the Himalayas.

If you would like to help Sophie and Peter smash their target then please click here

Thank you Eagles Badminton Club!!

Friday June 22nd was The Cystic Fibrosis Trust “Wear Yellow Day”. This was the same day as The Eagles Badminton Club based in Hornchurch, Essex had their annual prize presentation. A donation box was put by the refreshments and £55 was raised by those attending. They have given us this money to add to our total for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

A huge thank you on behalf of Banana Crumble and The Cystic Fibrosis Trust to all the Eagles members for raising this money. This means that we have met our next big milestone. £4000!! for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust
