Abracadabra….

A Saturday tale to make you smile. Whether it is true or a bit of poetic licence has been added the thought of the following did make me laugh, especially with all of the online deliveries that people have had during lockdown.

The box where it asks if you are out do you have any other instructions eg leave with neighbours has always been intriguing. Sometimes when you say leave with neighbours it is thrown over the gate. Are these instructions ever read and then you hear tales like this and you realise that some delivery people really do go the extra mile to make sure those details are followed.

In the tale I heard, as a joke, the person ordering had filled in those extra instructions and said “knock three times, shout abracadabra as loud as you can and then turn and run away.” When the delivery was made the lady who was dropping the parcel followed those instructions to the letter but what she didn’t realise was that the actions were filmed by the camera system in the door bell. I wonder how many times this tale has been told both by the person who gave the instructions and also by the person following them. Certainly made me smile!!

A genuine thank you

How many times during a day do we say thank you and actually just say it out of politeness without really thinking about it. Last week, and again this evening, with the applause for the NHS it gave everyone a chance to say thank you to all of the staff on the front line.

There are literally so many people that are helping us with our current situation be it people working in supermarkets, refuse collectors, delivery people, military, utility workers, train, bus drivers, postmen and women to name but a few. These people need to know that they are appreciated too. It is really easy to grab a parcel and say a quick thank you to the person handing it over. Why not make sure you actually say it like you mean it.

A smile and a really big thank you and just a few words can go a long way in helping people to feel appreciated and to know that we the public are grateful for everything that they are doing. The rubbish was collected from my house a few days ago and I happened to be on the driveway. Normally I would just yell a quick thanks but this time I added a few extra words and was rewarded with a huge smile. Hopefully this can make a difference and reinforce the debt of gratitude we owe everyone who is keeping life as normal as it can possibly be in these completely unprecedented times.

Don’t forget, 8pm this evening is the time to be at the front of your property, on your balconies or at your windows to give another well deserved round of applause to say thanks to everyone that has helped us during these unprecedented times.

We all need a laugh..

Following on from our “What Made You Smile Today?” article from last week, a true story that will surely bring a smile to your face.

We all know the trials and tribulations of trying to do an online shop at the moment and all appreciate the logistical nightmare that everyone trying to book slots, do their shopping and shortages must be causing the supermarkets during these completely unprecedented times.

We did manage to get a booking slot and have been adding items. As fast as we do, then they get dropped off the list. Sometimes products are offered as replacements. Our story is one such swap. During the time of lockdown it has given us an opportunity to try and do things that we haven’t had time to do before. One such thing that we have been determined to do is make a carrot cake.

Looking at the recipe we needed Bicarbonate of Soda and ordered the Dr Oetker variety. A few days later when we logged on to check if everything was still available we noticed that the Bicarbonate of Soda was no longer available and they were offering a replacement item. Yes, it was still Dr Oetker but not what we wanted, the item they were suggesting for a swap was Dr Oetker 18 party candles!!! Interesting swap and not sure what the carrot cake would taste like!!!!

What has made you smile today?

With all the doom and gloom that is around us we thought we would turn everything on its head and we would look at the things that have made us smile today.

The tulips in our featured post were from bulbs that Dad gave me shortly before he died. Today they have burst into flowers and that certainly made me smile.

I think the current situation should make us appreciate all the things that we do have, that normally we wouldn’t even notice. How much blossom there is on a tree, the feel of the sun on your face. There are just so many things that we all take for granted and in this time we should all try and find at least one thing each day that has made you or someone else smile.

I am going on holiday or am I?

Sometimes things aren’t necessarily what they seem. You hear people say the camera doesn’t lie!! We know all the filters and tricks we can use to make us look, bigger/ smaller, older/ younger, etc and how you hear tales of posting Facebook messages about things that have been slightly fabricated or exaggerated. This picture so made me laugh and I wonder how many people have been fooled by a photo like this!!! Made us smile and hope it does the same for you!

Talk about stating the obvious……..

A few days ago we had a meeting with those involved with the Banana Crumb-Ball and decided that we would cook a Chilli Con Carne. It was delicious and as usual plenty was made meaning that there was some left over. Chief Banana, Matt asked if he could take the leftovers to work for his lunch.

On numerous occasions Matt’s lunch has been left in the fridge, so to avoid disappointment and missing out, Richard left him a note on the fridge. In the morning the sign was still on the door and it literally made me laugh out loud. This is what it said.

Whatever next…. Hot in the Oven!!!!!! Certainly made me smile!!!

When looking for some inspiration for really obvious signage we also came up with these. Hope we have made you smile today…

New clothes please!!!

When Banana Crumble was launched we said that we wanted to feature positive stories or ones that made you smile. This is definitely something to make you smile.

Wimbledon is now reaching the latter stages and there have been many great matches during the tournament. The Wimbledon tournament epitomises everything British and has so many long standing traditions that make it the great tournament that it is. Although it is one of the top Grand Slam tournaments it still manages to keep that old fashioned feeling whilst being completely modern as well. The sunny weather always helps and it is around this that our article about making you smile is set. Imagine in the high heat of the day, playing a game of mixed doubles and taking to your chairs during a break to focus on the game, talk tactics and to suddenly have your peace broken by…….. the sprinkler system switching itself on several times soaking both players, their clothes and equipment. Officials were seen trying to stop the water with their feet. Maybe if the temperature  reaches a certain figure this could become a Wimbledon fixture.

To watch this hilarious clip click here. It certainly did make us smile and no doubt it will do the same to you.

Reasons to be cheerful !!!!!

Today is Saturday 19th May 2018 and it is momentous day in the British calendar as Prince Harry and Megan Markle will be getting married in Windsor at midday. There will be hundreds, if not thousands of articles written about the society wedding of the year or probably even the decade!! Here at Banana Crumble we would like to wish the Royal couple a very long and happy marriage. We decided that it really should be a “feel good” day and we thought it would be great to look at 5 reasons we feel brings the country together and celebrate using the words of Ian Dury “Reasons to be Cheerful”.

A Wedding – everyone, or almost everyone, loves a wedding and it gives people the chance to celebrate. People are holding street parties and events all over the country and, in fact, all over the world. Here in the UK we are great at all the pomp and ceremony and people from all over the world look on in envy at what we have and what we do to celebrate such events. If you want to escape the Royal Wedding then it gives you a perfect opportunity to do something different. Not all weddings are as lavish as the Royal Wedding but to see young love being joined together will bring a tear to almost anybody’s eye.

A sunny bank holiday – our last bank holiday was one of the hottest on record and to see how people absolutely loved that weekend was amazing. Everyone had tales of BBQ’s, outside treats and it literally did make everyone smile. Roll on the next one and let’s hope it is just as sunny!!

Sporting teams – when our sporting teams do well and the whole nation gets behind them. Who doesn’t remember Jonny Wilkinson scoring that drop goal, Super Saturday at the 2012 Olympics, teams winning leagues and cups etc. We can’t forget that today is also FA Cup Final day and how all the fans travelling to the game and at home watching will have so many reasons to celebrate and be cheerful. That winning feeling is special and getting behind a team is one of those things we do well. Lets hope that the England football team can exceed expectations in the 2018 World Cup and we can have those euphoria days that happen when  any of the home nations are winning.  Bunting from cars and houses!!

A party or get together – be it a lavish birthday party, a small gathering and everything in between. Who needs an excuse. It is great spending time with friends and family as they all join in with a common interest. We are all so busy that time spent with our nearest and dearest is always to be cherished.

Winning a prize – of course a Banana Crumble free cash giveaway prize! So many of our winners have told us that winning one of our prizes really made their day. One said it turned a dreary Thursday into a great day. We will settle for that!!

These are our top five reasons to be cheerful but there are many more. Why not let us have some of your cheerful stories to feature on our Good News Page and help us make the nation smile!!
