Kingsbridge, a town in Devon has turned its traditional red phone box into a tiny nightclub – complete with a music system, glitter ball and lighting, making it the smallest nightclub in the UK. Only one or possibly two people at a real squeeze can fit into the tiny nightclub.
You are unable to make phone calls from the box but instead you can choose from a section of tunes from the equivalent of a Juke Box. The telephone box is in Fore Street and plays records like Blondie’s Hanging On The Telephone and Telephone Line by Electric Light Orchestra as well as many others!
The 8ft 3in (2.5m) tall box became the 5,000th to be adopted from BT when Kingsbridge Town Council took ownership of it.
Music fans can now listen to records by paying £1 to use a dial-a-disc type record system, with all proceeds donated to Kingsbridge-based charity @115. This local charity helps adults with learning difficulties.
Towns can officially adopt a telephone box and many have been used for a multitude of ventures. Lots of towns see the red telephone box as part of the community and would rather see them being used for something rather than just left empty and unused.
What a novel way of trying to raise money for a local charity. I am sure people will come from far and wide to go to a record breaking night club…
