Banana Chat – Meet Emma Pallett

My name is Emma, I’m a 20 years old and am studying English Literature with Creative Writing at The University of Nottingham. Before heading off to University I went to school and lived in Essex; usually this statement is met by groans and questions such as: is everyone actually orange? The answer to that is, yep, pretty much! I’m having an amazing time at university and keep myself very busy playing basketball for the university team and also taking part in a lot of plays at ‘The Nottingham New Theatre’ and at the end of this term I’m in an adaption of Shakespeare’s ‘Titus’ so I’m pretty excited for that. I love the night life in Nottingham and often find myself in Crisis on a Wednesday night or at a gig in Rock City so it’s a rare occasion that I actually realise I’m doing a degree; that’s what uni’s about, right?!

Favourite Joke:
Ok, so I don’t have a favourite short joke as such but I absolutely LOVE Micheal McIntyre: he just manages to capture everything that’s completely ridiculous and stupid about human beings and especially the British! The best sketch has to be the one where he shows the three different British responses to wasps in the garden; one person always insists that staying still is the best policy even after they’ve been stung and that makes me laugh because that’s exactly what happened to me!

What makes you smile?
Performing onstage! When stories need telling it just makes me smile to know that I’m the one who gets the chance to do so and there’s nothing that would make me ever want to stop those stories from being heard and seen.

Favourite good news story
Every year I take part in Operation Christmas child no matter where I am or who I’m with; my favourite news story is that one year when a woman was working abroad in a deprived area a girl who had received a shoebox ten years prior to this moment recognised her hero from a photo she had kept and ran to her as if an old friend. That to me is an amazing moment where someone who never expected to get thanks for her good deed could actually see the positive effect her donation had on someone life.

What inspires you?
The Edinburgh Fringe festival inspires me; the amount of young people collaborating in theatre for 75 years at the biggest arts festival in the world was just an incredible experience to have been part of and has inspired me to continue doing what I love and supporting others.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would remove everyone’s fear of failure; it’s only that which stands in the way of so many people and creates other negative emotions such as jealousy which only weighs you down!

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
Probably the ability to control time because then I could relive the best things I‘ve ever done!

What is your favourite food?
If I’m going out for dinner I will always choose a Turkish place; all the meats marinated in amazing sauces is just the best and the restaurants always have such a homely cosy vibe. If I’m eating at home it has to be spag bol!

What is your favourite drink?
Wow, ok what a question for a student! I’m going to go with a Singapore Sling cocktail which just has a mix of all the best ingredients including sloe gin and pineapple!

If you are going on holiday, what luxury item would you take from home?
This is a super easy one: my harem trousers have to come everywhere with me! They are the best things in the world because they are so comfortable and bright and just make me feel happy!

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
Lower the student loan significantly and remove interest rate. The interest rate is so ridiculous that no one can pay it back apart from very few people with great jobs which they would have worked hard to get. It isn’t fair that those few should be paying back hundreds of thousands in student debts because no matter how hard they work they will always have that hanging over them. The high fee has a negative effect on our society as it is a deterrent to young people who are considering university.

Random piece of information that people wouldn’t know about you?
When I was 14 I made it into the East Region Squad for women’s Basketball and now I play for my university (The University of Nottingham).

What s your favourite phrase or saying?
‘You can’t be everybody’s cup of tea; why would you want to be?’ ~ Kacey Musgraves

What cause/project/charity or anything else would you like to plug?
Cancer research is something that is close to my heart as it is for many people!

Who is your favourite music artist?
I love love love country music! It’s been my favourite genre for probably about 7 or 8 years now, it’s just such a broad genre and there’s heartfelt and clever lyrics for when you’re feeling nostalgic so I’ll listen to a bit of Dixie Chicks and then other times it’s the most feel good genre ever and they sing about beer, trucks, the sunshine, enjoying life and getting over all the negative stuff and I’ll listen to Dierks Bentley or Luke Bryan.

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life the most?
Probably my brother; we’ve always done a lot together from going to scout camps when we were younger to going to concerts and on nights out now. We have such different interests and we know that we both support one another in the things we do.

Banana Chat – Meet Joe Heath

My name is Joe, I’m a 21 year old Medical Student studying in Nottingham. I grew up in Essex and have been spoilt with some cracking friends from school and uni. When I’m not working I’m playing football, watching football or asleep. I also enjoy playing the guitar and keeping my sanity reading a good book. I look forward to life as a doctor and hope to get some experience working abroad in medicine in the not too distant future.

Favourite Joke
I’d like to say Manchester United…
But I’m a fan of one liners so: What do you call a man in a slow cooker?

Stew.

What makes you smile?
David Attenborough’s every word, what a man.

Favourite good news story?
I read recently that a family’s house burnt down in a forest fire in America. One member of the family was a young man with Downs Syndrome, who had an incredible collection of videos and DVD’s – all of which he lost in the fire. But thanks to the good people of social media, within days thousands of strangers were sending him old or spare films so he could rebuild his collection in the wake of this tragedy. The young man was absolutely thrilled that people were so thoughtful, and he couldn’t wait to start collecting again. Made me smile.

What inspires you?
Knowing there’s hundreds of countries I’m yet to, but plan on, visiting. Life is too short to settle for comfort and convenience. My desire to explore cultures and areas most could only dream of seeing, is what inspires me to aim for the top of my profession.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
People turning a blind eye to suffering and hate.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
That’s a tough one – I’d have to say time travel though – imagine the state of the football transfer window or American politics in 100 years time? In all seriousness though, I’d love to go back and experience some of the biggest moments in history.

What is your favourite food?
Basically anything with hummus can get me through the day. Lindor chocolates run a close second though.

What is your favourite drink?
Gin and tonic. Oh, non-alcoholic? A pint of summer fruits squash.

If you are going on holiday, what luxury item would you take from home?
A camera.

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
It is hereby illegal to spit in the street, doing so will result in you being fined, imprisoned and having to lick it back up. Pet hate of mine, if you can’t already tell.

Random piece of information that people wouldn’t know about you?
I’m apparently the only person ever to have not seen (or cared for) Game of Thrones.

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
“The more the merrier.”

What cause/project/charity or anything else would you like to plug?
Dementia UK – having had first-hand experience of the impact of Dementia on patients, families and carers, I know how life changing and difficult a diagnosis it is. Dementia UK provide nurses and carers to work side by side with families. Improving care, treatment research and support for families would make such a difference.

Who is your favourite music artist?
My music taste is really varied so it’s impossible to name just one. I was brought up listening to both rock and soul music, so Foo Fighters and Stevie Wonder are up there for me. Right now though I’m really into Frank Ocean and Roy Woods.

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life the most?
I couldn’t possibly just pick one person! Thinking about it, I have shaped a lot of my own life in the last few years. But if I had to say someone, I’d say my Dad. His advice and guidance has seriously helped me through life. Love you too Mum!
