A half Marathon for Diversity Role Models

My name is Justin Farrance and I’m running my first ever half marathon in 8 weeks for a charity called Diversity Role Models. I’m training five times a week and hope to get a finish time close to 1 hour 35 minutes.

Here’s a bit more about the importance of DRM and the reasons I’m running for them:

In the UK, over 45% of LGBT pupils are bullied in schools and over 50% hear homophobic slurs often. It goes without saying that this can have detrimental impacts on a student’s mental health, learning ability and wellbeing. Would you want to be sat in a classroom worried of being bullied for who you are?

I met Diversity Role Models (DRM) two years ago whilst interning at Magic Circle Law Firm, Allen & Overy. DRM work with both students and teachers across the UK to help create a future generation that is accepting of everyone. Education is the best place to start with such a mission. The charity was recently awarded the 2018 European Diversity Award’s ‘Charity of the Year’ signifying how valued their interactive workshops are. All donations and fundraising goes to the heart of their projects/resourcing and helps to reach more schools.

How do I know all of this?

I volunteer for the charity and have seen the work they do inside schools first hand. Recently, I visited a school in East London with DRM to deliver a diversity workshop to three different classrooms/year groups. At the end of the day, I overheard young students pledging their commitment to respect each other, no matter of their differences, which was truly heart- warming. One student anonymously wrote some extremely touching feedback I’ve left below which really emphasises the importance of the work DRM do.

‘If someone is bullied for being different I would make sure that the person who gets bullied in my class is actually happy for being unique and making the world more fun’.

I want to change the way people donate to a standard JustGiving page and make the prospect of donating fun and interactive so if you donate £5 or more, you’ll be in with a chance of winning a wide range of prizes/experiences.
