Banana Chat – meet Milly Marshall

Hello, my name is Milly, I’m 21, studying medicine at the University of Nottingham, and about to start my 5th year in a few weeks time, having found out I passed my fourth year yesterday! Having been brought up in Shrewsbury (quite a small town), I look forward to hopefully becoming a GP somewhere in a slightly bigger city in the future, as well as doing quite a bit more travelling along the way. I am most grateful for the amazing friends I have from uni and home, and really enjoy travelling, chilling and eating (a lot of food, especially chocolate / cheese!) with them.

What is your favourite joke?
I’m awful with jokes and don’t know any but the only kind of joke I can think of is: ‘Owain Hughes, and before you ask, no I don’t’ (Gavin and Stacey)

…I don’t get it either, not sure anyone does, but I really hope to find out some day!

What makes you smile?
I absolutely love being on holiday, the sun (and getting a good tan) can never fail to make me smile! But as previously said, being with my friends, and also my family are most important to me.

What is your favourite good news story?
This is a tricky one – my mind is filled with what seems to be negative news stories at the moment! However, seeing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex get married and now recently have a son was lovely.

What inspires you?
My grandmother, who I call Joules. She is the most kind, generous and beautiful woman inside and out. We have always been close, she is a real inspiration to me, and I strive to be as loving as her in the future.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
It truly upsets me that misogynism and sexism still exists today. I would love for all girls and women to be treated as equals to boys and men. I believe this is improving, however we still have a way to go.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
Definitely flying – I have done a skydive in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust, and despite being sick all over myself (and the instructor behind me!) whilst parachuting down, it was brilliant, and something I’d love to be able to do (with the aid of antisickness tablets!) all the time.

What is your favourite food?
I’d normally say chocolate – but recently I believe cheese may have taken over!

What is your favourite drink?
Prosecco – can’t go wrong.

If you are going on holiday what luxury item would you take from home?
Contact lenses (if that counts?) – many people don’t know that I wear glasses as I HATE being seen in them, so I’d need my contact lenses to get me through!

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
It really annoys me when I see street pavements spotted with chewing gum remnants, so definitely no spitting out chewing gum onto the pavements please!

Give us a random piece of information about you that people wouldn’t know?
Hmm, I always find this is a difficult one, but I guess that I’ve recently learnt how to do sign language, which I aim to keep improving.

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
‘What’s occurring?’ (Gavin and Stacey) or any Ja’mie quote.

What cause, project or event would you like to promote?
NSPCC – keeping children safe could not be more important.

Who is your favourite music artist?
I’d be killed by one of my housemates if I didn’t say Shawn Mendes!

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life most?
As previously said, my grandmother! My parents have also been amazing to me.

Banana Chat – Meet Joe Heath

My name is Joe, I’m a 21 year old Medical Student studying in Nottingham. I grew up in Essex and have been spoilt with some cracking friends from school and uni. When I’m not working I’m playing football, watching football or asleep. I also enjoy playing the guitar and keeping my sanity reading a good book. I look forward to life as a doctor and hope to get some experience working abroad in medicine in the not too distant future.

Favourite Joke
I’d like to say Manchester United…
But I’m a fan of one liners so: What do you call a man in a slow cooker?

Stew.

What makes you smile?
David Attenborough’s every word, what a man.

Favourite good news story?
I read recently that a family’s house burnt down in a forest fire in America. One member of the family was a young man with Downs Syndrome, who had an incredible collection of videos and DVD’s – all of which he lost in the fire. But thanks to the good people of social media, within days thousands of strangers were sending him old or spare films so he could rebuild his collection in the wake of this tragedy. The young man was absolutely thrilled that people were so thoughtful, and he couldn’t wait to start collecting again. Made me smile.

What inspires you?
Knowing there’s hundreds of countries I’m yet to, but plan on, visiting. Life is too short to settle for comfort and convenience. My desire to explore cultures and areas most could only dream of seeing, is what inspires me to aim for the top of my profession.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
People turning a blind eye to suffering and hate.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
That’s a tough one – I’d have to say time travel though – imagine the state of the football transfer window or American politics in 100 years time? In all seriousness though, I’d love to go back and experience some of the biggest moments in history.

What is your favourite food?
Basically anything with hummus can get me through the day. Lindor chocolates run a close second though.

What is your favourite drink?
Gin and tonic. Oh, non-alcoholic? A pint of summer fruits squash.

If you are going on holiday, what luxury item would you take from home?
A camera.

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
It is hereby illegal to spit in the street, doing so will result in you being fined, imprisoned and having to lick it back up. Pet hate of mine, if you can’t already tell.

Random piece of information that people wouldn’t know about you?
I’m apparently the only person ever to have not seen (or cared for) Game of Thrones.

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
“The more the merrier.”

What cause/project/charity or anything else would you like to plug?
Dementia UK – having had first-hand experience of the impact of Dementia on patients, families and carers, I know how life changing and difficult a diagnosis it is. Dementia UK provide nurses and carers to work side by side with families. Improving care, treatment research and support for families would make such a difference.

Who is your favourite music artist?
My music taste is really varied so it’s impossible to name just one. I was brought up listening to both rock and soul music, so Foo Fighters and Stevie Wonder are up there for me. Right now though I’m really into Frank Ocean and Roy Woods.

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life the most?
I couldn’t possibly just pick one person! Thinking about it, I have shaped a lot of my own life in the last few years. But if I had to say someone, I’d say my Dad. His advice and guidance has seriously helped me through life. Love you too Mum!
