Banana Chat – Meet our Chief Banana – Matt Austin

My name is Matt, I am 21 and currently living in Essex. I work in London whilst studying a part time degree.  The majority of my spare time is spent playing Cricket or watching Football, but to be honest, give me any sport and I’ll give it a go. I came up with the idea of Banana Crumble whilst on a train home – the idea of the FREE cash draw is not to change someone’s life drastically but for someone to be able to afford to go out for dinner or to put towards their weekly shop. I really hated the bad press many people my age were getting and wanted somewhere we could prove 99% of the time we are achieving some great things. Luckily enough my parents agreed with me and liked the idea and Banana Crumble was born.  My mum has since become the Director of the company. I am really lucky with having some great friends and family who support me in everything I try to achieve.

Favourite Joke

What cheese do you use to hide a small horse?

Mascarpone.

What makes you smile?

Hearing about all the good things that happen in people’s everyday lives. Also, I can’t complain about watching England smash Australia in the cricket!

Favourite good news story?

I have seen a lot recently about how a few members of the German community in WW2 managed to smuggle out children who were meant to be going to concentration camps. For people to put their own lives at risk to save people they don’t know is a real heart warmer for me. This was made doubly true after my recent trip to Krakow where I toured Auschwitz.

What inspires you?

One of my major inspirations for choosing the Cystic Fibrosis Trust as our charity of the year was my next door neighbour Sophie Holmes. Being able to achieve some of the amazing things she has done and keep pushing herself even harder and faster is a great inspiration and I think everyone could help use her as motivation to realise you can achieve anything you want to in your life.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?

People seeing the good in what others do rather than the negatives. On average, I believe there is one good news story to every ten bad ones reported, when in real life that isn’t the case. Why is it that bad news gets all the press? That’s where Banana Crumble can hopefully come in.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?

I would have to say teleportation – could you imagine you could go on holiday or be able to get from A to B with a click of your fingers? It would make life so much easier and also means no queues.

What is your favourite food?

My dad’s chicken and gammon pie is incredible but who can say no to a medium rare fillet steak?

What is your favourite drink?

An odd one here but you have to try it – Dark Rum (Kraken) and Apple Juice.

If you are going on holiday, what luxury item would you take from home?

I think, nowadays a mobile phone is a very important item. This is because it has a number of different uses. You can see a beautiful view – get your phone out and take a picture. You want to liven up the atmosphere – get your phone out and put some music on. Lost in the middle of a place you have never been to before – get your phone out and check a map. For these three reasons alone plus many others, I have to say a mobile phone. If a mobile phone isn’t considered to be a luxury item, then it would have to be my hair gel!

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?

If the weather gets above 28 degrees (highly unlikely in the UK I know) schools and work have to allow its members to wear shorts and receive free ice cream to keep them cool. Working in a ridiculously hot room no matter how old you are, is never enjoyable.

Random piece of information that people wouldn’t know about you.

When I was 17 I lived in a tent in the Malaysian jungle. A truly great experience. I really don’t talk about it enough but what a great experience to share with my best friend Joe.

What is your favourite phrase or saying?

“Forti Nihil Difficile”

What cause/project/charity or anything else would you like to plug?

Of course, it has to be Banana Crumble. I believe signing up is a no brainer. We don’t send you spam emails, just one weekly newsletter. It is completely free to be a member and we are helping out a fantastic charity Cystic Fibrosis. Why wouldn’t you sign up?!

Who is your favourite music artist?

In the modern day, I have to say Ed Sheeran. I am a huge fan as are so many people in the world. On a night out I’m happy with anything that I can sing along with as well!! (Although my voice isn’t much to behold)

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life the most?

I have been really lucky throughout my life and had a number of friends and family support me in what I do but I do have to say the opportunities my Mum and Dad have given me have really shaped me into who I am today! Whether it be holidays, work or education they have always been there with me and I cannot thank them enough for all they do for me.
