Check on Ya Mate

Last year we featured a really great initiative aimed at students and we thought we let you know about their latest plans. 5asideCHESS was launched by Ryan Child as a way of combatting mental health issues. A quick game of chess, limited to just one minute with ten pieces a side was the initiative aimed at breaking down barriers and getting people to talk.  5asideCHESS ran a tour that they called Battling Suicide. On the 1st February they launched their second tour at Southampton University.

The idea behind the tour and the bus was to give students a safe place to talk about their mental health issues and to try and solve some of the issues that students have when they leave home. Many students make friends a plenty and enjoy every second of their time at university. Many others don’t and feel lonely and isolated away from friends and family and their normal support network.

Ryan was asked to do a report for the local BBC and soon after the report he was then featured on national television. To see the interview and find out more about this please click here.

The Battling Suicide Tour Bus is planning to visit many more universities and colleges where hopefully allowing people to interact and chat will help people break the ice and make contact with people. It encourages people to talk about their metal health issues. Mental Health is such an important topic. If people don’t do anything and issues get swept under the carpet then later these will reoccur. It takes strength of character to come out and talk about issues but talking is such a great therapy and with the right help and support some of these negative mental health issues can be turned round to be a positive experience and one that will shape people’s lives going forward.

We know that we have many members that attend universities across the whole of the county and we encourage anyone who needs to talk to find someone who will listen and for those who are absolutely loving the university life and all that it has to offer takes a look around them and if they see someone who may be struggling, reach out. A smile, a few words really can make such a difference to people. We are really please that Ryan has joined forces with us in our latest Smile Wall competition where as well as the winner of the most liked photo getting a £50 Amazon voucher they will also win one of the 5asideCHESS sets. The theme of our Spring competition is “Check on ya Mate” and to submit a photo please click here.

Banana Chat – meet Ryan Child

My name is Ryan Child. I live on a bus, travelling the country on the Battling Suicide Tour. The 5asideCHESS project is all about getting people to connect.

I play chess and write and run.

What is your favourite joke?
The one about superman, wonder woman and the invisible man.

What makes you smile?
Nearly everything.

What is your favourite good news story?
When caged animals eat humans.

What inspires you?
The determination of people without perceptible hope.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Lack of perspective. It would be good if more people could spend a few days experiencing what a person’s life from a completely different background is like. The good thing is that is possible, people just have to be more willing to do it.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
I would quite like to be like the blue girl from X-men.

What is your favourite food?
Cheese.

What is your favourite drink?
 Rubicon Mango.

If you are going on holiday what luxury item would you take from home?
A cattle prod for people with selfie sticks.

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
I would implement a ‘National Civic Service.’ Everyone has to spend a year helping their country. It could be painting walls or building a community center. Anything really. Do some hard work, understand we all have a part to play.

Give us a random piece of information about you that people wouldn’t know?
I played for Bristol City until I was 18. Actually, I’m pretty sure I never stop going on about that.

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
The course language of hard-working men.

What cause, project or event would you like to promote?
The Battling Suicide Tour at 5asidechess.com. I live on a bus and travel around the UK, visiting universities, colleges and workplaces. It’s all about getting people to connect more. To me, that’s probably the biggest tool we have for improving society.

Who is your favourite music artist?
I like songs more than artists. Purple Rain by Prince. Weak become Heroes by the Streets. Tennesse Whiskey by Chris Stapleton.

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life most?
Both of my parents.

PJ’s or Not?

Hot or cold? Cold

Cat or dog? Dog

Blue or pink? Blue

Tea or coffee? Coffee

Glass half-empty or glass half-full? Half-full!

Pyjamas or not? Not

Night out or night in? Night out

Pizza or pasta? Pizza

Biscuits or cake? Neither

Wine or beer? Wine

Football or rugby? Football

Cinema or theatre? Cinema

Gym or TV? Gym

Naughty or nice? Confused

Silver or gold? Gold

Tent or hotel? Tent

Bath or shower? Bath

Starter or pudding? Starter

Sheets or duvet? Duvet

Love Island or Game of Thrones? Game of Thrones

Finally, apple or banana? Banana

Battling Suicide Tour – 5asideChess

The 5asideCHESS team are heading off on the Battling Suicide Tour on July 19th, raising awareness of suicide prevention and promoting good mental health. All through the medium of talking. 5asideCHESS is a cut down version of the traditional game.
The 5×6 boards are used as ‘icebreakers’ by volunteers who offer people that chance to talk at cafes, rehab centres, nursing homes and other locations across the country. The idea is to get people off their phones, out of their homes and back into the ‘art of conversation.’ And, after eight months working on the project fighting loneliness and social isolation, Directors Ryan Child and Ross Smith have decided to tackle suicide head on with a nationwide tour.

The tour kicked off in Cambridge on the 19th July before heading to the Edinburgh fringe and back down the west coast of the UK. Click here for more details about the event.

Keep your eyes open for updates as the tour progresses. Banana Crumble wishes them all the best for this.
