Good Luck to The Roses

by Banana Crumble | Jul 20, 2019

Earlier in the year we ran a feature about all of the amazing sport that was taking place this summer. The nation has definitely been gripped by sport. Last weekend saw a thrilling Wimbledon final, Lewis Hamilton winning the British Formula One Grand Prix and the England cricket team crowned World Champions in what can only be described as one of the best games ever. As this article goes to air golf’s The Open is taking place at Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim and no doubt the nation will once again be gripped by sporting action.

Today is the turn of the ladies as The Roses take on The Silver Ferns from New Zealand in the second of the semi finals at this years Netball World Cup which is being held in Liverpool. The semi final will take place at 3pm and will be shown on free to view television. The first of the semi finals is between the hot favourites from Australia (Aussie Diamonds) who are current World Champions and underdogs from South Africa (Proteus). This first semi will take place at 11.15. Australia are hotly tipped to retain their World Cup title but if the English girls have anything to do with it the trophy will not be going down under. Tracey Neville who is England’s Head Coach is in optimistic mood buoyed by the team’s great performances so far during the competition. The final will take place on Sunday. Let’s hope that England make the final and can make it two team World titles in seven days with a repeat of their 2018 Commonwealth Games victory over the Australians.

Men’s sport has always seemed to take priority and even when I was researching facts for this article today, I typed into google netball World Cup and the top listing was all about the men’s cricket World Cup!! The BBC has launched #changethegame to showcase women’s sport. More women’s sport is being shown on live free to air channels than ever before. The nation loves to get behind our country and creating positive role models for youngsters is an important role for all athletes whether they be male or female. Celebrate all sport!!
