Banana Crumble were lucky enough to visit the Isle of Wight during Cowes Week recently.
It was during this visit that they found out first hand about the 1851 Trust by talking to professional sailor and World Champion Annie Lush and listening to sailing legend Ben Ainslie.
The 1851 Trust was launched in 2014 and has The Duchess of Cambridge as its patron. When she was made patron she was reported as saying:
“I am delighted to be Royal Patron of the 1851 Trust. I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed sailing from a young age and I know it is a great way of providing young people with the opportunity to develop skills and confidence. It is a hugely exciting time for sailing as the British Challenger bids to bring the America’s Cup back to Britain. I am looking forward to being part of this journey and I hope that through the 1851 Trust we can engage and inspire a new generation into sailing along the way.”
During 2018 The 1851 Trust has been running a nationwide roadshow, giving people a chance to get out on to the water and learn more about the technological aspects of sailing and to further encourage youngsters to take up STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related study and careers. Not every child lives in an area where they can have the opportunity to get out on the water so it is hoped that by involving top sailors, including Annie Lush, Ben Ainslie and others that the youngsters will be inspired and, in turn, help bring the America’s Cup back to Britain.
Students that may have not originally been interested in science based subjects before were given the opportunities to try these subjects in a fun but real life situation and it has shown them that anything is possible, The 2018 Roadshow has been particularly aimed at girls as the Trust feels that many girls are not encouraged into science fields.
Banana Crumble will be keeping an eye on this and hope to bring updates between now and the America’s cup competition and we wish the team at the Trust and the racing team all the very best going forward.
