The Queen and Prince Philip will celebrate their Platinum Wedding Anniversary today, Monday 20th November – an amazing 70 years together.
As they prepare to mark the milestone we take a look back at their long and happy marriage.
Supposedly in love with him from their first meeting in 1939 when the then Princess Elizabeth met him for the first time during a Royal visit to his naval college in Dartmouth. She was 13, he was 18.
Their engagement was announced at Buckingham Palace when Elizabeth turned 21.
They were married later that year at Westminster Abbey on 20th November 1947
Their first child, Prince Charles, was born in 1948 and Princess Anne the following year..
Following the death of her father, King George VI, Elizabeth succeeded tothe throne in February 1952 with her coronation taking place on 2nd June 1953.
Prince Andrew was born in 1960 and Prince Edward, their fourth child, was born in 1964.
In 1977 Peter Phillips, the first of their eight grandchildren, was born. Zara Phillips followed in 1981, Prince William in 1982, Prince Harry in 1984, Princess Beatrice in 1988, Princess Eugenie in 1990, James in 2007 and Lady Louise in 2008, both children of Edward and the Countess of Wessex. There are currently five great-grandchildren.
They will mark this anniversary with a private dinner at Windsor Castle, attended by family and friends.
They are the first royal couple anywhere to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.
