Banana Chat - meet William Marler

by Banana Crumble | Feb 13, 2019

I’m an award-winning animator, keen runner, and Cystic Fibrosis patient living in Birmingham, England. I’m very lucky for my CF to not stop me doing what I want, such as: running the London Marathon, making Pep Mask – a Cystic Fibrosis film that’s been screened worldwide, and speaking to a number of audiences about my life and work

What is your favourite joke?
Velcro… what a rip off!

What makes you smile?
My fiancée

What is your favourite good news story?
The world banana stock is clearly high enough for people to use them in novelty photographs.

What inspires you?
My family and people with CF who don’t let their situations stop them fighting, like Elle Morris.

Elle was a girl with CF who passed away in January 2018 and became well-known beforehand for her lung transplant wait. Whilst she was waiting for a transplant, her family made her ‘wishes’ come true, which were shared online along with her journey. After receiving a transplant near the start of 2017, she unfortunately slowly declined and passed, but she was known for her resilience and positive outlook, despite her situation.

The Elle’s Wishes facebook page is still active as a way to remember her and continue inspiring other people with CF, and you can find it here:

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Prejudice and intolerance to minority groups.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
Flying would definitely cut down on travel costs.

What is your favourite food?

What is your favourite drink?

If you are going on holiday what luxury item would you take from home?
Probably a book… that’s not luxurious though is it?

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
All paparazzi photos had to include a banana in front of the person’s face.

Give us a random piece of information about you that people wouldn’t know?
I did the London Marathon in 2015. I’ve never once mentioned it. Keep it to yourself…

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
If you can fill the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run. (If, Rudyard Kipling).

What cause, project or event would you like to promote?
I host a podcast called Straight from the Lungs which aims to share real stories from real people affected by cystic fibrosis. All episodes can be found at with more coming soon!

Who is your favourite music artist?
Michael Jackson or Laura Marling
