Banana Chat - Meet Sophie Holmes

by Banana Crumble | Oct 17, 2017

Sophie Holmes was born ten weeks premature and was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at four months old. Her parents were told that she may not live beyond her teens. Sophie spent huge amounts of her young life in and out of hospital, receiving constant physiotherapy and on permanent medication.  Read to find out more about the real life Sophie Holmes and how she is now a real inspiration not just to those with CF but to us all.

What is your favourite joke?
I put a bet on a horse at twenty to one, it came in at quarter past two.

What makes you smile?
The thought of my next adventure/challenge.

What is your favourite Good News story?
This is my favourite Good News Story. It is about Sophia, she’s got CF. I asked her mum, Lisa Hyde, to do a little write up.

“Sophia was born a week early after a fantastic normal pregnancy. Paediatric doctors could see straight away something was wrong with her bowels. She was taken to GOSH and had an emergency operation for meconium ileus. After a month in hospital at GOSH we were released to come home. Unfortunately for us this was not to be the only operation she would have. She’s had 3 bowel operations, been under general anaesthetic more times than I can remember. She is one strong cookie though. She has never once complained about her condition or used it to her advantage. She is one of the fittest 5 year olds I know. She has been really healthy the past couple of years (few odd bugs, viral infections). She is at school in Year 1 and does so much exercise. She does ballet, disco, acrobatics, gymnastics, swimming, biking, running each week for at least an hour a day. She will this weekend take on her 25th park run. She is an inspiration. I don’t know any other child that does as much as she does. I am worn out running her around to all the clubs. We as a family have always been into exercise and healthy eating so I guess she was born into the right family for this condition. We know there will be dark days ahead but whilst we are healthy we give it 100%.”

What inspires you?
New goals, new challenges and of course achieving them.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Time and gravity, the two most powerful negative forces in the world. I would find the world’s smartest scientists and ask them to find me more time and to reverse gravity’s effect on life. Then I’d figure out a way to pass my new-found powers to people and I’d give it away to all of the people I love

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
To Teleport because then I could be anywhere whenever I wanted and visit places I have not yet seen.

What is your favourite food?
Ah, now this has got the be the toughest question you can ask a food lover!! It has to be peanut butter!

What is your favourite drink?
Easy, I love a coffee – especially in the summer where you can make a protein iced coffee!

If you are going on holiday what luxury item would you take from home?
My Go Pro, capturing life unforgettable moments.

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
That every should have to an organ donor because it can save multiple lives.

Give us a random piece of information on you that people wouldn’t know about you?
I did burpees at 5,859m to celebrate summiting Mount Kilimanjaro

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
Any dream is possible if you have the courage to pursue it

What cause/project/charity or anything else would you like to plug?
Cystic Fibrosis – to raise enough awareness and money so that research can be carried out in the hope that one day a cure is found, especially for those in need.

Who is your favourite music artist?
Tough question, depends on the mood I am in but got to love a bit of Ed Sheeran to sing along to.

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life most?
My parents and sisters, for their endless support and believing in me and all of my crazy ideas and goals even if it scares them!
