Banana Chat - Meet Matt Austin - our 100th Week Special!

by Banana Crumble | Aug 14, 2019

Hello, my name is Matt Austin and I am the founder of Banana Crumble. Since its launch we have moved away from some of our initial ideas and focussed on good news and organising charitable events throughout the year. So far Banana Crumble has raised over £7000 to support Cystic Fibrosis. I currently live in Essex and work in the City of London whilst studying a part time degree in Computer Science. My favourite hobby is cricket and I currently play for Old Southendian and Southchurch Cricket Club and have been lucky enough to tour both India and Australia. I also enjoy following my favourite football club Arsenal. Banana Crumble is now officially 100 weeks old and to celebrate I wanted to see how much had changed in my life by answering the below questions again…..Enjoy!

Favourite Joke
Did you hear about the explosion at the cheese Factory?!

There was De-brie everywhere…

What makes you smile?
Spending time with family and friends is what makes me smile. Whether it is catching up over dinner, a quick pint or chilling in front of the TV.  Time with people close to me is really special and something I certainly appreciate.

Favourite good news story?
England winning the Cricket World Cup – even though we are 1-0 down in the Ashes.

What inspires you?
One of my major inspirations for raising money to help the fight against Cystic Fibrosis was my neighbour Sophie Holmes. Being able to achieve some of the amazing things she has done and keep pushing herself even harder and faster is a great inspiration and I think everyone could help use her as motivation to realise you can achieve anything you want to in your life.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Reducing the amount of plastic pollution. I have seen first hand how beautiful places like the Great Barrier Reef and Malaysian coral reefs are. It would be such a loss to the world for such important marine life to be lost forever. The damage single use plastics have on the environment is catastrophic and affects all of the animals living in the water and even further down the food chain.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
I would have to say teleportation – could you imagine you could go on holiday or be able to get from A to B with a click of your fingers? It would make life so much easier and also means no queues.

What is your favourite food?
My dad’s chicken and gammon pie is incredible but who can say no to a medium rare fillet steak?

What is your favourite drink?
An odd one here but you have to try it – Dark Rum (Kraken) and Apple Juice.

If you are going on holiday, what luxury item would you take from home?
I think, nowadays a mobile phone is a very important item. This is because it has a number of different uses. You can see a beautiful view – get your phone out and take a picture. You want to liven up the atmosphere – get your phone out and put some music on. Lost in the middle of a place you have never been to before – get your phone out and check a map. For these three reasons alone plus many others, I have to say a mobile phone. If a mobile phone isn’t considered to be a luxury item, then it would have to be my hair gel!

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
All people should be able to travel freely to which ever country they please with no visas required. The world is an amazing place which everyone (who wants to) should be able to experience different cultures, languages, food which would hopefully bring the world together.

Random piece of information that people wouldn’t know about you.
I can recite the colours in Joseph’s Technicolour Dream Coat…. Next time you see me ask me… I won’t get it wrong!!!

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
Forti Nihil Difficile

What cause/project/charity or anything else would you like to plug?
The Banana Crumb-Ball. We are hosting a Charity Ball to raise money for the Southend Cystic Fibrosis Association.

Who is your favourite music artist?
In the modern day, I have to say Ed Sheeran. I am a huge fan as are so many people in the world. On a night out I’m happy with anything that I can sing along with as well!! (Although my voice isn’t much to behold)

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life the most?
I have been really lucky throughout my life and had a number of friends and family support me in what I do but I do have to say the opportunities my Mum and Dad have given me have really shaped me into who I am today! Whether it be recreation, holidays, work or education they have always been there with me and I cannot thank them enough for all they do for me.
