Banana Chat - meet Chris Sorrell

by Banana Crumble | Jun 06, 2018

My name is Chris Sorrell – Advertising guru, dedicated father of two, Old Southendian legend, SAFE charity trustee, fervent blood donor. I first gave blood when I was 19 and have given two or three times a year ever since. I have now given 57 pints and have been presented with bronze, silver and gold awards. The last is at 75 pints when you receive a voucher for a meal out. I give because it costs nothing and I want to help when I can. Please go to and find your nearest venue and date to give. You get free biscuits and tea as well!!

What is your favourite joke?
Bloke goes to the doctor’s, says “I’ve got a strawberry stuck in my bum”, doctor says “I’ve got some cream for that”.

What makes you smile?
Anybody making a fool of themselves.

What is your favourite good news story?
Anybody who overcomes adversity, whether child or adult.

What inspires you?
Great sportspeople have always inspired me, particularly cricketers from the mid 70s & early 80s like Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Ian Botham etc.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Terrorism in general, people just blaming anybody but themselves for their actions.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
Invisibility, I could do lots of good things with that.

What is your favourite food?
Anything edible really, look at me, always liked chips though.

What is your favourite drink?
Bitter shandy, you can drink twice as much.

If you are going on holiday what luxury item would you take from home?
Years ago it would have been my pillow but today I suppose my phone charger.

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
I’d make voting compulsory, you can turn up and spoil your ballot paper for all I care but you should turn up. People have died to make sure we live in a democracy and freedom should be sacrosanct.

Give us a random piece of information about you that people wouldn’t know?
I was locked in my bedroom when I was 9; I escaped out of the window, over the extension, jumped down, ran down the garden and jumped over next door’s fence. I got as far as Gainsborough Park before my dad found me.

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
Are you going to eat that?

What cause, project or event would you like to promote?
Compulsory blood donation and organ donation, assuming you are able obviously. Your organs are no use to you when you’re dead and giving blood is so easy and so valuable.

Who is your favourite music artist?
Queen and Freddie Mercury. At the age of 18 I saw Freddie on Darth Vader’s shoulders at Wembley Arena singing We Will Rock You, it has never been bettered.

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life most?
My mum without any shadow of doubt. She has been and still is a great source of information and knows the answer to most things apart from sport. She gives advice when asked, and sometimes when not asked but always has mine and my family’s best interests at heart.
