Banana Chat – meet Callum Kelly

This week’s Banana Chat is with our inspirational person of the week – Callum Kelly – A Helen Barrett Bright Awards winner, an apprentice tattooer and artist from where Robert Burns lived……

Hi, I’m Callum. I’m 28 and I live in Ayr, Scotland (that’s where Robert Burns is from!) I work at The Petal Faced Gypsy Tattoo Studio just down the road in Prestwick where I have been an Apprentice for the past year and a half. I suffer from Cystic Fibrosis and Type 1 Diabetes although I do my best to not let either of those get in the way of an otherwise normal life. I share a home with my girlfriend Emma, a 2nd year Anatomy student at Glasgow Uni and our cat Hippy, who sleeps for about 18 hours a day. If you’d like to see my tattooing, search for @cally_kelly on Instagram or search for Callum Kelly – Apprentice Tattooer and Artist on Facebook. Have a look for PFG Tattoo on Facebook too to see the work of all the talented artists I work beside!

What is your favourite joke?

I doubt you’d print my favourite, so here’s a nice wholesome joke:

Venison’s deer, isn’t it?

What makes you smile?
Good weather, cocktails, good music, good tattooing and good friends!

What is your favourite good news story?
Any heartwarming story involving dogs or cats.

What inspires you?
Good tattooing. I look up to a lot of artists from all over the world, it’s nice to see their recent work online regularly.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Complete disclosure on all information on ufos and aliens.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
I’d like to be able to talk to my cat. Not entirely sure how good a superpower that is though, I doubt I’d be able to stop any bank robberies with that one..

What is your favourite food?
Cheese on everything. Everything.

What is your favourite drink?
Pepsi Max.

If you are going on holiday what luxury item would you take from home?
My 8×10 promotional photograph of Kiefer Sutherland from 24.

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
That organ donation should be an opt-out policy worldwide.

Give us a random piece of information about you that people wouldn’t know?
I regularly get pedicures

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
I swear a lot.. sorry mum 🙁

What cause, project or event would you like to promote?
I’d like to mention the Helen Barrett Bright Ideas Award. It’s an award given to Cystic Fibrosis patients every year to help fund creative projects. I was one of the winners last years and they gave me enough funding to cover the cost of my first tattoo machine and a whole bunch of other supplies that were otherwise out of my price range at the time. Applying is super easy, just a short essay or video presentation on what you do and what you’d use any funding for!

Who is your favourite music artist?
Too many to choose from, today it’s a Canadian punk band called PUP, but my answer will probably be different tomorrow.

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life most?
My dad probably, he taught me how to draw and paint when I was younger. He passed away in 2008 though, so in more recent years it’s probably been my girlfriend Emma, and my mentors Sean and Gordon, who have been good enough to teach me to tattoo!
