Banana Chat - meet Ashley Runeckles

by Banana Crumble | May 09, 2018

My name is Ashley, I’m 22 years old, from Essex, and I’m an actress. I currently live in Walthamstow with 3 girlfriends that I trained with but I’m an Essex girl through and through. I recently graduated from The MTA in Tottenham and since then have toured the north of the UK with a christmas panto, and have just finished starring in a short film. I work at GAP to pay the bills and when I’m not swapping shifts around to go to auditions, I can be found in the gym weight training, or tavelling between Essex and Woking to see my family and boyfriend. I’m a people person, I enjoy talking to strangers and learning new things.

What is your favourite joke?
Why was the washing machine laughing? Because it was taking the pee out of the knickers

What makes you smile?
Sunshine, good music (anything from the 80’s), spending time with my closest family and friends, and my doggo.

What is your favourite good news story?
I’ve seen a few videos on social media feeds recently of young children performing random acts of kindness from saving their pocket money to send across the world to help other children who have nothing, to class mates coming together to buy birthday presents for fellow students who can’t afford said gifts. We could all take a leaf out of their books.

What inspires you?
The idea that I can always be better than what I currently am. The want to improve and succeed drives me everyday! And my not so little sister plays a part; she’s been through a lot and I want to be a role model for her. I want to show her, and other people just like her, that unfortunate life experiences should be embraced and built upon.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
The growing ‘importance’ of social media, especially with young people. There is so much more to learn about the world than which Kardashian has recently undergone more surgery, and what ab exercises will give you give you the body of a swimmer if you do them 40 times everyday. It’s a fake world full of unhealthy role models and unoriginal ideas. We should be encouraging younger generations to find themselves and explore the real world instead of hiding behind a screen waiting for likes and follows.

If you could have one superpower what would you choose and why?
I’d be fearless! I’m a bit of a control freak and it often hinders me in life, I’d love to be a ‘yes’ person and just do things without worrying about all the negatives.

What is your favourite food?
I love spice and tomato flavours so Mexican food I guess. I make a mean chicken curry that always goes down a treat, and I LOVE sour sweets. Fizzy laces are my absolute guilty pleasure; 3 for £1 in Tesco, don’t tease!

What is your favourite drink?
Sparkling water all day every day. And if it comes down to an alcoholic beverage I love my liqueurs, I’m a Tia Maria girl.

If you are going on holiday what luxury item would you take from home?
My diary (if that counts). Writing is so cleansing, especially when I’m in a foreign place away from everyday stresses, the creative juices just flow! Second on the list would be my moisturisers, look after your skin now and it will look after you later.

If you could make one law, what would it be and why?
Every family would be entitled to a family ticket for the theatre every year. I think it’s important that we introduce young people to the arts and one of the main issues with this is the lack of accessibility to currently do so.

Give us a random piece of information about you that people wouldn’t know?
My two front teeth are fake!! When I was in year 8 I got whacked in the mouth with a hockey stick that killed a nerve in my front tooth. I’ve had root canal 6 times and now have two lovely venirs. Moral of the story here is always wear a mouth guard kids!

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
She who dares, wins. Because let’s be honest, it’s true. Should really do that more often.

What cause, project or event would you like to promote?
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been starring in a short film called ‘Autonomous’, written and directed by Daniel Outram, cast by Amy Vosburgh, and co-starring the extremely talented Rupert Graves and Marion Bailey. This is my first film and has been a completely surreal experience! We have one night shoot left before the editing process begins and I cannot wait to share all the hard work that has gone into it from the most amazing crew and cast. You can follow me on Twitter to follow the progress; @ashleyruneckles

Who is your favourite music artist?
My music taste is very broad and anything that fits within the categories of Soul/R&B/80’s Pop is right up my street. Luther Vandross, John Legend, Lianna La Havas, and the Drifters are among my most played artists.

Who is the person that you feel has shaped your life most?
This is a tough one. My mum taught me everything a girl growing into a woman needs to know and morphed from a mother figure into a best friend and I’m absolutely blessed to have had the relationship that I did with her. She taught me to be kind, to love, to laugh, to be the best version of me, and if I’m half the nutty woman she ever was then I’ll be happy. But the truth is my dad has shaped my life and is to thank for the person who stands before you today. He’s very real and down to earth and a lot of people don’t like that, but he taught me to be a fighter, to follow my dreams and never settle. I’m lucky to have his support in everything I do and I wouldn’t have been able to come this far in my personal life, and career, without his care and influence.
